PACTORAB-20 is a sterile, lyophilized (freeze-dried) intravenous proton pump inhibitor (PPI) formulation by Pacitora Biotech containing Rabeprazole Sodium 20 mg (IP) . It is indicated for the rapid suppression of gastric acid secretion in clinical situations where oral administration is not feasible – including critically ill patients in the ICU, post-operative patients who are nil by mouth (NPO), patients with upper GI bleeding, severe esophagitis, dysphagia, or severe nausea/vomiting.
Rabeprazole is a potent PPI that works by irreversibly blocking the proton pump (H+/K+ ATPase) in the gastric parietal cells – the final common pathway of gastric acid secretion. Among all PPIs, rabeprazole has one of the fastest onsets of action and provides consistent 24-hour acid suppression. The lyophilized (freeze-dried) formulation ensures stability and easy reconstitution before IV administration.
Key Benefits:
Rapid Intravenous Acid Suppression – Immediate reduction of gastric acid secretion.
Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) – Irreversibly blocks the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells.
Lyophilized Formulation – Stable powder for reconstitution; easy to store and administer.
100% Bioavailability – IV route ensures complete absorption (unlike oral which is variable).
For NPO Patients – Essential when oral intake is not possible (post-surgery, ICU, dysphagia).
Stress Ulcer Prophylaxis – Prevents upper GI bleeding in critically ill patients (ICU setting).
Acute GI Bleeding – Reduces rebleeding risk following endoscopic hemostasis.
Treats GERD & Erosive Esophagitis – For moderate to severe acid reflux with esophageal damage.
Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome – Effective for gastric acid hypersecretion disorders.
FAQs:
1. Why is Pactorab-20 given intravenously instead of as a tablet?
IV route is used when oral administration is not possible – unconscious patients (ICU), post-surgery (NPO), active GI bleeding, severe dysphagia, or intractable nausea/vomiting.
2. How is Pactorab-20 administered?
Reconstitute the lyophilized powder with 5-10 ml normal saline or sterile water, then inject slowly IV over 2-5 minutes. May be further diluted and infused over 15-30 minutes. For IV use only.
3. What is the advantage of Rabeprazole over other PPIs?
Rabeprazole has the fastest onset of action among all PPIs, providing acid suppression within 1 hour. It also has minimal interaction with clopidogrel and is less affected by genetic variability (CYP2C19).
4. What is a lyophilized injection?
Lyophilization (freeze-drying) is a process that removes water from the product, resulting in a stable powder that can be easily reconstituted before use. It ensures longer shelf life and better stability.
