PACITREX-S is an advanced, combination antibiotic formulation by Pacitora Biotech containing Ceftriaxone (a third-generation cephalosporin) and Sulbactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor) in a 1.5 gm vial. This powerful combination is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing resistant organisms that would not respond to ceftriaxone alone.
Many bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamase that destroys ceftriaxone and other beta-lactam antibiotics, rendering them ineffective. Sulbactam inactivates this enzyme, “shielding” the ceftriaxone and allowing it to reach and destroy the bacteria. This makes Pacitrex-S highly effective against resistant strains, including some ESBL (extended-spectrum beta-lactamase) producers.
Key Benefits:
Dual Action Against Resistant Bacteria – Ceftriaxone kills bacteria; Sulbactam protects it from beta-lactamase destruction.
Overcomes Antibiotic Resistance – Sulbactam inactivates enzymes produced by resistant bacteria.
Broad-Spectrum Coverage – Effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative & some anaerobes.
Enhanced Efficacy – Sulbactam extends ceftriaxone’s spectrum to include beta-lactamase producing strains.
Once or Twice Daily Dosing – Long half-life of ceftriaxone allows convenient dosing.
Treats Moderate to Severe Infections – Pneumonia, complicated UTI, intra-abdominal infections, sepsis, meningitis.
Surgical Prophylaxis – Prevents post-operative infections, especially in high-risk procedures.
FAQs:
1. What is the advantage of Pacitrex-S over regular ceftriaxone?
Sulbactam (the “S” in Pacitrex-S) is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects ceftriaxone from being destroyed by resistant bacteria – making it effective against many strains that would otherwise be resistant to ceftriaxone alone.
2. Can Pacitrex-S treat MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)?
No – Pacitrex-S is NOT effective against MRSA. Vancomycin, linezolid, or other MRSA-active agents are required for MRSA infections.
3. Is Pacitrex-S effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa?
No – ceftriaxone has limited activity against Pseudomonas. For suspected Pseudomonas infections, ceftazidime, cefepime, piperacillin-tazobactam, or carbapenems are preferred.
4. What is the dosing frequency for Pacitrex-S?
Due to the long half-life of ceftriaxone, Pacitrex-S is typically administered once or twice daily depending on the severity of infection. Follow your physician’s prescription.
